Understanding extended depth of focus and its role in myopia management
Extended depth of focus (EDOF) is a fundamental optical principle taught to all those studying optics. Interestingly, it is only in recent years that the technology has been successfully used in mainstream vision correction modalities, although has been used for some time with intraocular lenses in order to deliver multifocal vision at intermediate and near following cataract surgery. Relatively recently, similar technology has been introduced into the contact lens arena to help presbyopes see at all distances. This lecture will revise the principles of EDOF, review the differing approaches to delivering EDOF as well as the respective pros and cons of the various products currently available to practitioners. Finally it will also discuss how these same EDOF lens designs can deliver myopia progression management in children.
