The LOC Support Unit (LOCSU) provides quality, practical support to Local Optical Committees (LOCs) in England to help them to develop, negotiate and implement local objectives in respect of primary ophthalmic services.

LOCSU has developed a number of enhanced services eye care pathways including Glaucoma, Cataract and PEARS (Primary Eyecare Assessment & Referral Service) and provides LOCs and commissioners with expert advice, associated business cases, clinical training packages and implementation tools to assist with the commissioning of these pathways at a local level. Enhanced services based on the LOCSU pathways have now been commissioned in many areas.

LOCSU is a key interface between the optical, representative bodies and the LOCs, facilitating robust lines of communication between the national organisations and the grass roots of the professions. LOCSU also has a role in communicating to commissioners the importance of  eye health, and the contribution community optometry practices can make in improving local eye care pathways by providing services beyond GOS. LOCSU also provides training and development for LOCs to assist those leading at a local level, and is a source of bespoke advice and support for LOCs on all issues that affect them.
