The WCSM Education Trust Bursary Scheme

Following the transfer of direct training from the WCSM Education Trust to ABDO College, the Trustees of the WCSM Education Trust launched a new venture to fulfil their principal charitable aim, which is to advance study, knowledge and education in the field of optics for the public benefit.

In July 2016 the Trustees launched a new bursary scheme, aimed at students beginning training at a recognised UK institution with the intention of taking up an optical profession. The aim of the bursary scheme is to encourage committed and talented individuals into all branches of optics.

The scheme was very successful in 2016, with more than 240 applications received, competing for 25 bursaries of £1,000 each. The bursaries were awarded to students across a range of courses at 10 different UK optical departments and training institutions. Trainee dispensing opticians, orthoptists and optometrists have all benefited from bursaries.

The amount of the bursary is deliberately not enough to fund a whole programme of training but is intended to make a difference to someone’s first year of study. The bursary is only available to students beginning optical training in the UK ie it is NOT available to second and third year undergraduates or post-graduates or for studies undertaken outside the UK.

Applicants must complete an application form and follow the process set out in the Statement of Process and Guidance Notes.

Successful bursary award winners are required to submit receipts to show how they have spent the money and they must report back to the Trustees on their progress half way through their first year. On the basis of those reports, at least one student will be invited to join Spectacle Makers at a Court Lunch, in the hope that they can learn from those around them, as well as understanding a little more about optics’ own Livery Company.
