The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers is a City Livery Company, ranked number 60 in the order of precedence.

In the 17th Century the only means of helping people to see better was to use a glass lens, affixed to bone or wood – and this was how the Spectacle Makers plied their trade. Today the scope of what can be done to improve vision, and reduce sight loss, is so much greater and the work carried out by Freemen and Liverymen is very wide. Over 75% of the Company’s members are, or have been, engaged in some way in vision-related activity, whether as ophthalmologists, optometrists, dispensing opticians, orthoptists and optical nurses, manufacturers and distributors of contact lenses and intra-ocular lenses, optical assistants in practice, optical technicians in manufacturing laboratories and many, many other allied professions. But the Company is not "closed". We are pleased to be open to other influences and the Company set a policy early in its history of welcoming members from outside the optical world. Applications for membership are invited from professionals in all occupations.

The Company is thriving and active in optics, in the City and in communities where, every day, the Spectacle Makers’ craft is in evidence, helping people to improve the health of their eyes and to see better.
