Lutina is not a coating, but a lens material which helps to protect the wearer from the deterioration of Lutein within the macula, helping to prevent against eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Many ocular diseases are thought to be caused by oxidative stress due to the generation of singlet oxygen. Lutein is the main carotenoid that suppresses this oxidative stress.
Lutina has the ability to absorb light between 400 to 420 nm. Cutting light in this wavelength range effectively suppresses generation of active oxygen and deterioration of lutein. Just like taking supplements, wearing Lutina on a daily basis is thought to be an effective way of helping to keep your eyes healthy.
Lutina is available in single vision, office and progressive designs in 1.50, 1.60, 1.67 and 1.76 index and is recommended for patients who spend a lot of time in high UV environments, post-surgery cataract patients, those using a lot of screens and people at risk of AMD. Lutina is for everyone, children included. Start protecting your eyes from a young age.
