Sue Edwards BSc FBDO recently won the 2018 Optician Awards Winner of the Dispensing Optician of the Year. Sue is the Practice Manager and a Dispensing Optician at Martin Smith Opticians in Lincoln and was presented to Sue by the Editor of Optician magazine, Mr Chris Bennett, who praised Sue for her central role within the practice, building and driving the business forward, whilst demonstrating excellent dispensing skills from clinical through to fashion.
Martin Smith Opticians was established in 2004 by Martin and Hazel Smith and is a multi-award winning practice in the heart of Lincoln. As well as winning a previous AOP Award for the Optometrist of the Year, and Sue winning the highly acclaimed Dispensing Opticians Award in 2018, the practice was also a Finalist in 2018 for Independent Practice, Optometrist, and Optical Team of the Year. Previous years have also seen Finalist places for this outstanding practice.
Sue Edwards has been the Practice Manager of Martin Smith Opticians for the past 3 years and there have been many highlights including the UK Launch of the ground-breaking Paskal 3D refraction system which was held at the practice in October 2017.
Sue explains “we were the first practice in the UK to introduce this new sight testing experience to our patients – it is the most radical change in sight testing for 150 years! Our patients are amazed at the ease of the test as both eyes are kept open for the duration of the test making it relaxing, more enjoyable and actually we find the results more impressive too”.
“Winning the Opticians Award was a great achievement and I am proud to be recognised by the Optical Industry for my work. It has been a busy few years since I joined Dr Smith and in the past 3 years we have completely redesigned the practice which looks beautiful, and invested in the newest and most technologically advanced equipment. I have introduced popular events for our valuable clients such as colour & style days and open days, and ensure that the practice is part of the local community introducing sponsorship of exceptional young talent, such as Sean Hodkin, who trains locally but at Under 18 was the British number 1 tennis player. We supported Sean with his sports eyewear and keep in touch with him regularly.
My focus is and will always be putting the customer first at every step of the way, and my relationships with my customers are the reason I enjoy my role so much. I constantly source individual and stylish frames not readily available elsewhere, and support my team by focussing on their ongoing training to ensure we all remain at the very top of our game. I enjoy promoting the business and have success from my marketing in the most stylish and targeted media, which has helped the business grow rapidly. I am really proud of the practice and the team I work with and I am proud to have won this beautiful award – the only problem is I now want to win another!”
