Ophthalmology is among the most technology-driven of all the medical specialties, with treatments utilizing high-spec medical lasers and advanced microsurgical techniques, and diagnostics involving ultra-high resolution imaging. Ophthalmology is also at the forefront of many trailblazing research areas in healthcare, such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and - most recently - artificial intelligence. In my presentation, I will describe the motivation - and urgent need - to apply deep learning to ophthalmology, the initial results of our research, both with industry and academic collaborators, and finally, why I believe that ophthalmology could be first branch of medicine to be fundamentally reinvented through the application of artificial intelligence.

Why attend?

Why attend?

Ophthalmology is a fast-moving speciality where the pressure to deliver safe, effective, and timely care is greater than ever. The NHS faces unprecedented demand in delivering cataract, glaucoma, and medical retina services, and waiting times and service redesign are at the top of the policy agenda.

For UK ophthalmologists and the wider eye care team, the greatest need is for practical, applicable learning that directly improves patient services. Our planned programme delivers exactly that: three days of clinic-first sessions, each carefully designed to give you the skills, insights, and checklists you can apply immediately in practice.

  • "This is a unique opportunity for ophthalmologists to engage with optometrists. 100% Ophthalmology is an event that brings together eyecare professionals under the same roof, and that is an unmet need in the industry. At 100% Ophthalmology, ophthalmologists and optometrists can work together, be together, learn together and collaborate so that we can ultimately give better care to patients."
    Sunil Mamtora
    Ophthalmologist, NHS
