Lecture: Orthokeratology and myopia management

01 Mar 2025
CooperVision

This lecture will cover how orthokeratology changes the corneal curvature to correct myopia and the mechanisms behind this. As well as safety, efficacy and common issues with this method of correction, it will also demonstrate the instrumentation required to fit the lenses and how this can fit into the practice. The lecture will also cover how orthokeratology slows myopia progression in children by reducing the hyperopic defocus in the peripheral retina. After the lecture, delegates will have a better understanding of how orthokeratology works and how it can form part of their myopia management treatment strategies.

Learning outcome(s):

Ensure that patients or their carers have all the information they need to safely use, administer or look after ortho-k lenses, and treatment plan that they have been prescribed or directed to use in order to manage their eye conditions. This includes being actively shown how to use their lenses and wearing schedule (s.2)

Recognise how to conduct an adequate assessment for the purposes of fitting ortho-k lenses, including where necessary any relevant medical, family and social history of the patient. This may include current symptoms, personal beliefs or cultural factors (s.7)

Recognise the benefits of ortho-k as a myopia management strategy (s.5).
