Discussion workshop
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK and with around 40,000 patients developing ‘wet’ AMD each year (NOD 2023) it is likely that primary care optometrists encounter this silent thief of sight.
Just like detectives search for evidence to solve a case, clinicians must uncover the clues of AMD before it can leads to irreversible vision loss. This highly interactive session explores three contrasting cases, from subtle, easily missed changes to severe sight-threatening events, to demonstrate how thorough history taking, careful examination and appropriate imaging can reveal what lies beneath. By following the patient journey from diagnosis through to treatment and outcomes, practical lessons for everyday clinical decision-making are highlighted.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will identify at least 2 key signs of wet AMD to initiate timely referrals to secondary care, even in the absence of OCT imaging
- Practitioners will identify effective communications with patients following a wet AMD referral, including expected timelines, treatment options, and long-term management implications
