Lecture: Dry eye from optometry to ophthalmology - the IP and non-IP guide
This case-based presentation brings together optometry and ophthalmology to explore contemporary, evidence-based management of dry eye disease across the full scope of optometric practice. Delivered jointly by an optometrist and an ophthalmologist, the talk will follow real-world clinical cases to illustrate practical decision-making for both Independent Prescribing (IP) and non-IP optometrists. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating management pathways, including appropriate use of topical therapies, oral medications, device-based treatments, and criteria for escalation and referral. Attendees will gain clarity on how IP optometrists can confidently utilise their prescribing rights in dry eye care, while non-IP optometrists will be equipped with robust management strategies, safe treatment optimisation and effective co-management approaches. The session will also highlight how collaborative care between optometry and ophthalmology can improve patient outcomes in both primary and secondary care settings.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will recognise stepwise management strategies for dry eye disease, distinguishing appropriate treatment options including criteria for referral, relative to their scope of practice
- Practitioners will appraise the role of collaborative optometry–ophthalmology care in dry eye management and assess how shared care pathways support effective and patient-centred outcomes
