01 Mar 2026
Main Stage
Lecture
Specsavers Directors Giles Edmonds and Paul Morris will be joined by Dr Peter Thomas and Mike Horler from Cascader, the medical technology company launched by Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Topcon Healthcare. Together they will explore how the profession needs to develop its communication and clinical skills as well as connecting digitally to maximise its usefulness to the public and the NHS with an eye to the 10-year plan, including the NHS hospital online service. They will discuss how technology integrates into the future for patients and clinicians, notably to meet the challenges posed by diseases like glaucoma and how AI / decision support might fit into the solution.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will be able to describe how to adapt language and communication approaches to support patient understanding, explain how information about treatments, devices or medications should be provided and demonstrated to patients or carers, and recognise their role in enabling colleagues to communicate effectively with patients, carers and the wider practice team
- Practitioners will be able to explain how to apply professional judgement when using data from digital technologies, describe how to share patient information appropriately and maintain accessible records, and recognise the value of charitable and collaborative services in supporting individuals with glaucoma
