Lecture: "Not a lotta people know that” - top tips from an old optom
Some of the most valuable clinical lessons aren’t found in textbooks, but they come from experience. This session shares practical tips drawn from real-life case studies that highlight those "if only someone had told me" moments. We will explore how to safely prescribe for pre-septal cellulitis in children with penicillin allergies, including formulation considerations such as prescribing suspensions. The session will also cover how to deliver truly patient-centred care to individuals living with dementia, focusing on consent, capacity, and adapted clinical techniques, and how to tailor low vision aids (LVAs) to specific visual tasks, optimising outcomes for patients with sight loss.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will be able to identify appropriate prescribing decisions, including safe alternatives for patients with medication allergies
- Practitioners will describe dementia-friendly assessment methods and recognise how consent and capacity considerations influence clinical choices
- Practitioners will recognise different low vision aids and effectively communicate suitable options based on the functional demands of specific visual tasks
