Lecture with discussion workshop: How AI is transforming digital eye care - and what comes next
From automated OCT and fundus imaging interpretation, diagnostic and clinical management decision support, teleophthalmology-enabled referral triaging and virtual clinics to next generation chatbots, home patient monitoring and oculomics, technology is transforming the way we deliver care to our patients. Eye care is a front-runner in the development of digitally-enabled diagnostic tools and patient care pathways. Adoption and deployment of these potentially transformative innovations in real-life clinical care requires careful consideration of the impact on eye care practitioners, clinical service planning and patient needs and preferences. In this session, we will review current progress and opportunities in clinical AI and digital eye care, enablers and barriers to real-life adoption and exciting future prospects for the transition to an inclusive, patient-centric, and equitable future for eye care that will leave no patient or healthcare practitioner behind.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will recognise the benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations of adopting AI-enabled technologies in practice, taking into account patient needs, preferences, and equity of access
- Practitioners will describe current applications of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in eye care, including imaging interpretation, decision support, teleophthalmology, and home monitoring, and outline their role in clinical pathways
