Lecture with discussion workshop: Seeing beyond the surface - vitreoretinal pathology in community practice
Vitreoretinal presentations can be some of the most complex and high-risk decisions faced in community optometry. This practical, case-led session is designed to build confidence in assessing vitreoretinal pathology and making the right call - whether that’s to refer urgently, monitor safely, or reassure the patient. Using real-world examples and OCT imaging, the session explores common conditions encountered in practice, including macular holes, epiretinal membranes, lamellar macular holes, vitreomacular traction, retinal tears, retinal detachment, and floaters. Attendees will learn how to identify clinically significant change, recognise red-flag features, and understand disease progression. With a strong emphasis on decision-making and high-quality referrals, this session equips optometrists with clear, actionable guidance to improve patient outcomes, streamline referral pathways, and feel confident managing vitreoretinal pathology at the frontline of eye care.
Learning outcomes:
- Practitioners will distinguish between common vitreoretinal conditions, including macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreomacular traction, retinal tears and detachments, and identify red-flag features and indicators of disease progression
- Practitioners will evaluate when urgent referral, routine monitoring, or patient reassurance is appropriate based on clinical findings and OCT imaging of vitreoretinal case scenarios
