Attending a smaller trade show like 100% Optical has the benefit of offering more intimate connections, where vendors can allow potential clients more time for meaningful, in-depth conversations. You really have the opportunity to hone in on new trends, learning about new innovations directly from the designers.

Here are the top 5 trends I'll be checking out in the independent eyewear sector, and some brands to check out. I hope to see you there!

Genderless frames in bright colors

The Albert I'mStein collection has a global design team that creates frames to suit all personalities and characters, not bound to any gender or age. They aim to highlight originality, and add an energy of playfulness to the wearer.

Sustainability

Orgreen Optics, based in Denmark, and made in Japan has a collection called Quantum High that combines 3D printed polyamide fronts with ultra-light beta titanium temples, enabling complex shapes, and maximum comfort. I'm always eager to see where Orgreen takes this 3D technology. The shapes and colors in this collection are always amazing, and knowing there is less waste always feels good.

Architectural frames

Blake Kuwahara makes museum-worthy art pieces for the face. The brand ethos is to bring to market eyewear that is "artful yet wearable". His iconic frame within a frame, and newer Grey Label line create a design tension that is minimal yet compelling. Blake's frames are all at once classic and thoroughly modern. I'm always anxious to see what's new in the range.

Bold geometric frames

I'll be checking out Blackfin for bold Japanese titanium frames. They come in a remarkable range of colors that are always being updated, by the designers in Italy. Precision engraving using anodic laser technology in which the beam cuts through the surface varnish, creating amazing and unusual color effects.

Updated classics

Tavat, is a family-owned company based in Northern Italy. They expertly update classic shapes, and make traditional shapes feel expensive and new. There is meticulous attention to detail. They believe in craftsmanship techniques both old and new, and believe everything they make must be functional.
