FEB31ST
The FEB31ST Kireka Collection represents a rare fusion of regenerative natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and profound social impact - pushing the boundaries of what sustainable eyewear can be.
At its core is a completely renewable resource: bark from the Ugandan Ficus Natalensis tree, harvested through an ancient, harm-free technique. Unlike conventional wood-based frames, not a single tree is cut down. The bark is gently shaved, softened, and hand-worked into a durable bark-cloth material. Remarkably, the tree naturally regenerates its bark every five years and can be harvested for up to four decades, offering one of the most genuinely circular materials in modern eyewear.
This collection also stands apart for the human story embedded in every frame. FEB31ST collaborates directly with the Acholi women of Kireka - an empowered community in Kampala who revived this traditional craft as a means of survival and hope. FEB31ST purchases and integrates this material into its eyewear, delivering a partnership that provides vital economic support to help fund schools, healthcare, and long-term opportunities for the next generation.
Each frame is visually unique, distinguished by its raw, tactile texture and its one-of-a-kind design. The children of Kireka create vibrant natural colour patterns by decorating the bark-cloth with wildflower-dyed paint, often leaving subtle handprints or footprints - small signatures of the lives this project helps uplift.
The Kireka Collection proves that luxury eyewear can be truly regenerative, socially transformative, and aesthetically extraordinary. It’s more than a frame, it is a sustainable ecosystem, a collaborative artwork, and a living symbol of resilience.
As they say in Italy, the tree requires only “un piccolo taglio di capello” - “just a little haircut” - protecting the planet while changing lives.
