Centre for Sight study reports excellent visual outcomes correcting astigmatism with implants that increase range of focus

International research co-authored by Centre for Sight Medical Director Sheraz Daya finds more than 92% of eyes achieved 20/20 corrected distance vision or better

A new international study co-authored by Centre for Sight founder and Medical Director Sheraz Daya has reported excellent visual outcomes for patients with astigmatism undergoing cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery.

Published on 11 August, the multicentre study assessed the Isopure Serenity toric intraocular lens (IOL), designed to correct astigmatism while providing a wider range of vision.

The research involved 100 eyes from 65 patients across four international centres, including Centre for Sight in East Grinstead, Japan and France.

Results found that 92.93% of eyes achieved corrected distance vision of 20/20 or better, while 96.92% achieved 20/32 or better at an intermediate distance of 80cm – the type of vision used for everyday activities such as working at a computer or looking at a car dashboard.

The lens also demonstrated high refractive accuracy and stability, with 97% of eyes within ±1.00D of the targeted spherical equivalent and all lenses remaining within 10 degrees of their intended position.

Sheraz Daya, founder and Medical Director of Centre for Sight and co-author of the study, said:

"These are very encouraging findings for patients with astigmatism undergoing cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery.  We saw excellent distance vision and intermediate vision, important for everyday activities such as using a computer or looking at a dashboard.

"At Centre for Sight, constant audit, research and innovation are fundamental to how we improve patient care. Studies like this help us evaluate new technology using robust clinical evidence and identify the most appropriate treatment options for our patients."

The researchers concluded that the Isopure Serenity toric IOL provided good distance vision, functional intermediate vision, high refractive accuracy and good rotational stability in patients with pre-existing astigmatism.
