Ameenat Lola Solebo
Wellcome Fellow and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist,
UCL GOS Institute of Child Health / Great Ormond Street Hospital
Lola is a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), and Deputy Lead for the hospital’s Applied Child Health Informatics Theme.
She holds a prestigious Wellcome Trust Fellowship award, with her research team, CHOIR lab, based at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.
Her work investigates the determinants of outcome for children with eye disease, and how best to translate these findings into changes in practice and policy. Her studies span rare disease registries, cohort studies and interventional research, and she is also lead for the Childhood Ocular Inflammation Research (CHOIR) Biobank.
Her current projects aim to develop imaging-based disease metrics, patient reported disease metrics, and pipelines of data extraction from hospital electronic patient records, to stratify rare, potentially blinding childhood inflammatory eye diseases – but also to develop methods and approaches that will support the investigation of other childhood disorders.
She has published over 90 articles in peer reviewed journals, including the Lancet and Nature, as well as within high impact Ophthalmology and Rheumatology journals, and she has contributed to book chapters across eye and child health. Her work has been recognised through awards from multiple national bodies (e.g. the Royal College of Ophthalmologist and VISIONUK). She has contributed to the development of health policy nationally and internationally through roles with Public Health England, UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
Lola is passionate about science communication and patient engagement / involvement in research.
