Inspired by his father Nialle, a dispensing optician, Darren studied optometry at UMIST, graduating in 2002. He completed his pre reg training in Cardiff under the guidance of David Woolf and Sasha Macken and registered with the GOC in 2003. During his time in Cardiff he met his kindred spirit Nicola (also an optometrist). He and Nicola moved to Ludlow in 2007 to start his first practice with Specsavers. In 2010 he became a partner in Leominster and Hereford Specsavers, with Ledbury Specsavers opening in 2017. He has been chair of Herefordshire LOC since 2011 and is fortunate to work alongside several forward-thinking optometrists, dispensing opticians and ophthalmologists which has seen Herefordshire lead the way with optometry led community-based services. Darren most recently achieved the College of Optometrists higher certificate in medical retina through Cardiff University and the Victoria Eye Unit at Hereford County Hospital. In 2024 he was a founding member of Border Health Alliance, an independent treatment centre with the aim of bringing high quality and timely cataract surgery and YAG capsulotomies to Herefordshire utilising the highly trained and skilled local optometrists and consultant ophthalmologists.
