Dr Mark van Grinsven initially studied biomedical engineering after which he obtained a PhD in the field of artificial intelligence at the Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen in the Netherlands. His thesis was titled 'Automated analysis of retinal images for detection of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy'. After graduation, he joined Thirona and started the retinal image analysis division. Within Thirona, he leads the development of a CE certified software solution called RetCAD, intended for the analysis of retina images. In early 2023, the retinal image analysis division was spun off into a separate company, Thirona Retina, which he is currently leading as managing director.
