Discussion workshop: Effective communication - the key to unlocking excellent patient experiences and health outcomes
This discussion workshop session focuses on the perioperative journey of a patient undergoing cataract surgery. Discussions will cover a number of additional patient care needs requiring effective communication among the multidisciplinary team to ensure patient safety. This highly interactive session will enable delegates to experience the patient cataract journey and the care taken to ensure an excellent patient experience and positive health outcomes.
Learning outcomes:
Gain an understanding of the required processes undertaken for patients with latex allergies and the implications to the surgical list should any additional care requirements not be communicated preoperatively
Increased understanding of the safety checks undertaken with regards to intraocular lens implants and be aware of key factors which place patients at risk of incorrect lens implantation
Reflect upon the requirements of informed consent and the possible implications of invalid consent, as well as gain an improved understanding of principles of mental capacity &patient understanding prior to their surgery
Become aware of the pivotal role of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and how this document acts as an effective communication tool within the Theatre environment.
